- UN said the Nigerian government must ensure and guarantee the safety of students and teachers before lifting the ban on academic centres

- The world body claimed this will increase the confidence of students and other stakeholders amid insurgent attack and Covid-19 crisis

The United Nations (UN) has called for the protection of students and teachers from continuous terrorist attacks amid ongoing efforts by the government to reopen schools during the Covid-19 crisis.

Edward Kallon, UN resident and humanitarian coordinator, made this call on Tuesday, September 8, in a statement marking the International Day to Protect Education from Attack 2020.

Kallon stated that ensuring the protection of teachers and students will raise confidence as schools which were closed due to pandemic-related crisis are now moving back to full actions.

“As state governments plan to reopen schools after prolonged closures, building a resilient education system to withstand future shocks should be included in pandemic response plans.

"Education is essential to helping crisis-affected communities in the North-east rebuild and recover. Attacks on schools are a direct attack on future generations. I call on all parties to the conflict to take all necessary measures to protect education and give learners a chance to build a brighter future,” Kallon said.

The UN representative further stressed that prioritising safety in schools for teachers and students is suggestive of the government’s commitment to protecting investments in the education sector.

While noting that millions of children have been affected by the atrocities of terrorists in the northeast, Kallon called for collective efforts in the fight against the insurgency in Nigeria

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the Lagos government gave a new and rather interesting update on the plan for the reopening of primary, secondary and tertiary schools in the state.

According to Gboyega Akosile, the chief press secretary to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, all tertiary schools in the state would resume on Monday, September 14.

Akosile, in a tweet on Saturday, August 29, disclosed that both primary and secondary schools will tentatively be reopened on Monday, September 21.
