The Kano state government has revealed that nine people in the state were sentenced to death between a period of nine months after been found guilty of various offences.
Baba Jibo-Ibrahim, the spokesperson for the state’s ministry of justice, told Premium Times that the sentences were passed on the convicts from January to August 2020.
He, however, noted that none of these convicts on death row has been executed as they have appealed the judgment of the initial courts.
The BBC Hausa service reported that seven of the convicts were found guilty of homicide, one person guilty of rape, and another was guilty of blasphemy.
According to Premium Times, below are the names of the convicts and their offences:
1. Ali Abdullahi sentenced to death for homicide

2. Yakubu Dalha sentenced to death for murder by a high court.
3. Abdullahi Isyaku found guilty of murder by the state high court.
4. Mujahid Sa’id sentenced to death for murder by Court 13 of the high court.
5. Naziru Ya’u found guilty of murder by Court 1 of the high court.
6. Shehu Ado Shehu found guilty of murder by Court 6 of the high court.
7. Isah Auta convicted for murder by Court 1 of the high court.
8. Yahaya Aminu sentenced to death for blasphemy by an Upper Sharia Court.
9. Mati Abdu sentenced to death Upper Sharia for rape by an Upper Sharia Court.
Meanwhile, Kano singer, Yahaya Aminu Sharif, who was sentenced to death for blasphemy by a sharia court in that state may get no help from Muslim lawyers in his appeal against the judgment.
This is because the lawyers have been warned against doing so by the chairman of Sokoto State Ulama Forum of Izala, Sheikh Abubakar Usman Mabera
According to the Sheikh, any Muslim lawyer that takes up the case to defend Sharif has renounced his Islamic faith.
In a related report, Femi Falana, a human right lawyer has received the document of the Shari'a court verdict that sentenced a 22-year-old singer to death in Kano state over blasphemy.
Babajido Ibrahim, the spokesperson of the Kano state judiciary, made this known on Thursday, September 3, weeks after the singer was slammed with the judgement that is still drawing controversy.
Ibrahim said that certified copies of the verdict have been handed to Falana’s representative on Wednesday, September 2, in Kano to enable the human right lawyer appeal.
