- The plane was bound for Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, local media reported A Ukraine International Airlines jetliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran, capital of Iran on Wednesday, January 8 with at least 180 passengers and crew members on board.
Everyone on board died in the crash, the Iranian state news media reported. The Boeing Co. 737-800 single-aisle jet crashed after departing the Iranian capital’s Imam Khomeini International Airport en route to Kyiv, Iranian state television reports.
The Boeing 737 aircraft likely crashed due to technical difficulties, state media quoted Ali Khahshani, a senior public relations official at the airport, as saying. A spokesman for Iran’s emergency services, Mojtaba Khaledi, said that ambulances were dispatched to the crash site south of Tehran.
“The plane is on fire but we have sent crews ... and we may be able to save some passengers,” Pirhossein Koulivand, head of Iran's emergency services, told state television. A video purportedly of the crash circulated by the ISNA news agency showed the aircraft burning as it fell from the sky.
A Boeing spokesperson told CNN they are “aware of the media reports out of Iran and we are gathering more information.” Last month, at least 15 people died after a passenger plane carrying 93 passengers and five crew members crashed near the city of Almaty in Kazakhstan on Friday, December 27. Over 60 others including children survived the crash with 22 of them sustaining severe injuries as the plane was heading for the country's capital, Nur-Sultan, when it lost altitude during takeoff and broke through a concrete fence.
